About QiOn Mining Solutions

Optimizing resources is a strategic priority for mining companies. This is not surprising, considering that the heavy equipment used in the mining industry is subject to extreme conditions.

To meet these requirements and thus ensure efficient and reliable power output, QiOn has developed specific technologies designed in-house for machinery exposed to particularly demanding conditions and work cycles.

Cutting-edge power electronics, proprietary technologies designed to meet every type of project, powerful and extremely durable charging solutions, dedicated Software-Driven Data Control Systems and Management, battery-powered mobile solutions that can be equipped with MCS for MW delivery. Combined with comprehensive services, including training programs and maintenance. This is what QiOn offers to meet the needs of a sector that requires a tailored approach in order to build the most functional and durable solutions.

STRATEGIC MINING SECTOR PARTNERSHIPS

BESS & EMS FOR MINING

QiOn integrates its BESS technologies directly into mining projects. AC‑DC‑DC BESS configurations operating as a VPP (Virtual Power Plant) are QiOn's recommended approach for mining environments, delivering two core benefits:

  • They guarantee completion of the vehicle charging cycle under all grid conditions.
  • They act as a stabilizing element for the local power grid.

In this way, the QiOn MWh AC‑DC‑DC system functions not only as a vehicle charging support platform, but also as a VPP — becoming an integral part of a dynamic energy management strategy coordinated by Q‑EMS (QiOn Energy Management System).

Battery sizing is precisely calculated to maximize system performance and ensure consistent charging operations even under high utilization rates, accounting for depth of discharge (DoD) to protect long‑term infrastructure durability, maintain charging efficiency, and support reliable operations throughout the system's lifetime.

Understanding energy flow behavior within a BESS‑integrated charging system is essential to ensuring efficient, stable, and balanced operation of the entire ecosystem. Accurate flow monitoring enables optimal management of power exchanges between the grid, the storage system, and loads — reducing losses, improving conversion efficiency, and enabling advanced strategies such as peak shaving and load shifting.

Real‑time and historical flow analysis is critical to effective energy management: protecting electrical components, correctly sizing system elements, and ensuring all operating conditions remain within design limits.

This is where Q‑EMS comes into play, enabling:

  • Power conversion and energy management — through the integrated QiOn MegaSource system, it handles input power transformation, equalization, and rectification.
  • Voltage and frequency stabilization.

Q‑EMS is the operational brain of the entire installation. Going beyond monitoring, its advanced predictive and adaptive control architecture dynamically reads real‑time system conditions and proactively identifies the optimal energy management strategy.

Leveraging Q‑EMS, QiOn's BESS systems support discharge rates of up to 2C at multi‑MW power settings — designed to:

  • Maintain mining grid stability.
  • Prevent prolonged power outages.

Q‑EMS capabilities:

  • Anticipates critical events — imbalances, overloads, frequency fluctuations — and actively rebalances the system.
  • Calculates and implements, in real time, the most efficient strategy to stabilize voltage, protect components, and optimize THUNDERSTORAGE charge/discharge cycles.
  • Balances energy demand between the grid and battery storage, preserving the life of key resources.

QSDS (QiOn Step Down System)

The QSDS manages the step-down conversion from high voltage to lower voltage, housing the switching and distributing output panel and the EMS (Energy Management System) — which continuously communicates, controls, and monitors power flow throughout the system. The QSDS steps down the primary line input to deliver stable, consistent power to the MegaSources.

The MegaSource

The MegaSource is the core equipment for high-voltage, high-power charging applications. It combines three semiconductor technologies — MOSFET, IGBT, and SiC — in a hybrid electrical management architecture engineered for fast switching speeds, low switching losses, and high efficiency across high-frequency and high-voltage applications. QiOn's proprietary topology rapidly and efficiently rectifies high-energy AC inputs into DC output up to 1500VDC — and beyond, when required.

QDDC (QiOn DC-to-DC system)

QHVE and Q-DDC Systems

High density meets high efficiency

This system ensures the highest efficiency battery‑to‑vehicle energy delivery, saving up to 40%* of common unnecessary conversion rates of most outdated equipment on the market.

The Q‑DDC avoids meaningless DC‑to‑AC and AC‑to‑DC conversions, allowing significant energy cost savings.

DC‑DC Dispatch Panel

The Dispatch Panel monitors the DC output from multiple MegaSources. It contains a multiple‑reactive switchgear system and IOT sensoring system, constantly in communication with the QSDS and the MegaSources, providing a stable power supply to the chargers in the event of critical grid conditions.

QHVE Equalizers

Over long distances, DC lines exceeding 75/100m are subject to voltage instability. The QHVE actively rebalances MegaSource output to the chargers, ensuring consistent delivery.

MCS

QTMS (QiOn Thermal Management System)

A dynamic thermal regulation system that continuously adjusts battery pack temperature — cooling, heating, or stabilizing — in response to the surrounding environment. Enables reliable Polar-to-Desert operation across the full temperature range.

MCS (MegaWatt Charging System)

For projects involving heavy-duty vehicles and machinery, QiOn charging solutions can be equipped with MCS (MegaWatt Charging System) connectors, enabling multi-MW power outputs at scale. Charging power is delivered to high-voltage vehicles via a series of MCS connectors and sockets, configurable in vertical or horizontal arrangements to suit each installation.

Automated Robotic Arms

MCS connectors can be mounted on a fully automated robotic arm, which manages positioning and connection to MCS input sockets installed directly on trucks and mining machinery. An advanced 4-servomotor configuration is available as an option, introducing an additional degree of freedom for maximum adaptability.

The fourth motor is typically dedicated to wrist articulation or terminal axis tilt — particularly valuable for installations with multiple vehicles or high variability in connection point positions. All QiOn robotic arms include a protective cover for outdoor deployment.

Auxiliary Manual Charging System

QiOn can provide an auxiliary manual backup connection system installable in the handling bay — ensuring operations are never interrupted in the event of malfunctions, maintenance of the automated alignment system, or damage to the robotic arm.

QiOn 3D Vision Positioning System

Automated robotic arms are equipped with a 3D visual alignment system that generates a real-time 3D profile of the charging socket and precisely directs the plug to the connection point. Precision is ensured by multiple cross-viewing points captured simultaneously by a series of 3D cameras operating at different depth levels. Designed for harsh environments — high temperatures, dust, and mud — and fully protected by an IP67 stainless steel enclosure.

Constant real-time communication between the 3D system, robotic arm, and charging column ensures immediate response during activation and deactivation.
